CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Winning the 2012 Section 1 Boys Swimming Championship was enjoyable for Horace Greeley’s Risten Clarke.
The senior had so much fun last year he wanted to experience that feeling again. Not only did Clarke do so, he secured the title for the Quakers.
Clarke anchored the 400-freestyle relay leg in the final event, lifting Horace Greeley to the 2013 Section 1 title. Because of his clutch performance, Clarke is The Chappaqua Daily Voice February Student-Athlete of the Month.
Not only did Clarke close out the relay, he also qualified for the New York State Championships in two events.
“It means everything to win against such great competition and to do it two years in a row is a great accomplishment,” Clarke said.
Going into the 400 free relay, Clarke and his teammates knew they needed to win, but the captain said they did not feel any pressure.
“It was an amazing way to end my sectional career,” said Clarke of the 400 free relay. “The 400 free relay has always been an event Greeley has been very successful at and that was no different this year. It was our only win of the day and it was a great way to go out.”
Clarke, who plans on swimming in college, will graduate in June knowing he and his senior classmates made an impact on the program.
“What’s been the most enjoyable part is the tradition of Greeley swimming,” Clarke said. “The countless years of success and winning is something that every swimmer and athlete wants to be a part of.
“Greeley swimming is one of the best programs in the country and hopefully, as a senior captain, I have instilled the tradition of winning into the younger guys so that the tradition is continued.”
The student athlete of the month is chosen by the sports reporters and editors of The Daily Voice.
