Brett Comes Up Big for Horace Greeley in Win

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Jackie Brett was doing what all good point guards do, looking to get her Horace Greeley teammates involved in the offense.

The senior was making excellent passes and spreading the ball around, but the shots were not falling. Brett decided it was time to become a little more assertive, offensively. Once Brett did this, the fourth quarter of Greeley’s game with Fox lane, Friday, became a nail biter.

Brett assisted on the go-ahead basket and insurance hoop as Greeley held off the Foxes, 55-51 in a girl’s basketball game.

Brett scored nine of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter. She also had three  assists in the quarter. Issy Berkey added 18 points, including four 3-pointers. “As the point guard you have to create and look to get everyone involved,” Brett said. “I started to look for my shot when the team needed me.”

Fox Lane, which trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, came roaring back and eventually evened the score at 50-50 on a Julia Raue up-and-under move with 1:57 in the game.

On Greeley’s ensuing possession, Samantha Srinivasan kept the ball alive off of a missed shot. Brett got the ball back in her hands, drove the lane and fed Andi Picker, who yelled “Jackie,” and she swished a 14-footer from the baseline.

Greeley (8-3) forced a 24-second shot-clock violation on Fox Lane’s next possession. Following a time out, Berkey came off of a Picker screen and swished a 3-pointer with 39 seconds on the clock.

Fox Lane called a time out after Picker’s hoop. During the time out, Greeley coach John Alkalay mapped out the defensive and offensive assignments. “During the time out, coach drew that play up in the huddle,” said Brett of the Berkey triple. “Everyone knew they were going to get the ball to No. 4 so I made sure I stayed right next to her and did not allow her to get it.”

Brett was referring to Allison Lombardi, who led Fox Lane with 20 points. Raue finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
