“After a proud career as a civil servant, I wanted to earn a degree and set an example to my children that education is important," said Conforti. She initially enrolled in traditional classes but switching to online courses made more sense for Conforti, a single mother who was battling two cancers.
“There I was in the hospital dealing with chemo therapy and infections – my class work was a welcome distraction," Conforti said. "Online classes helped me get through one of the most difficult times of my life.”
Conforti has survived cancer but is still fighting illness. She intends to become an online college professor after her success with the courses.
“I’m still dealing with health obstacles, but the great thing about online learning is I can log on when it works for me," said Conforti. "Online learning gave me so much flexibility. There was nothing standing in the way of my education.”
“Christine epitomizes what it means to be an online learner," said Mary Lozina, Director, Online Learning. "She is self-motivated and technologically savvy. She is a critical thinker, an information manager and curator, an effective communicator and knowledge builder. While Christine credits her academic success to all of her inspirational teachers, it is clear that she achieved success because of her ability to persevere in the face of adversity.”
Mercy College offers more than 30 undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs entirely online.
