Task Force Ready For Development In Millwood

MILLWOOD, N.Y. – At least one Millwood resident is ready to see developmental ideas for the hamlet start to come out of the meeting room and be taken to the next level.

"I really want to see the Town Board make a genuine commitment to do something and do it in the right fashion," said Millwood Task Force member Donald Weisstuch. "Otherwise we’re going to continue to spin wheels and spin wheels and spin wheels."

Weisstuch, who previously served on New Castle’s Planning Board, said he has been meeting with town officials for years about an updated development plan but the discussions usually amount to very little.

“We had fits of stops and starts and stops and starts and nothing happened,” he said.

Millwood Task Force Chair Dianne Kleinman said that as a starting point for new development discussions, task force members will meet with Town Board member Elise Kessler Mottel. Weisstuch said he supports the meeting, but hopes it won’t be an ending point, as well.

Some ideas the task force hopes will come out of the meetings are the implementation of crosswalks across Route 100, extending the sidewalk in front of A&P and reducing the Route 100 speed limit from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour.

“One of the things we have talked about is walk-ability,” said Kleinman, who wants to see the downtown area become more pedestrian-friendly.

Task force member Jordan Schiffman would also like to see more screening for the state Department of Transportation station on Route 100, which he said is becoming an “eyesore.”

“That’s becoming the new station house,” Schiffman said. “Maybe use some of the town’s tree funds to plant some trees in front of that facility so we have it screened off instead of looking at the diesel tanks every day.”
