Chappaqua Station To Get Electric-Car Chargers

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Parking spaces with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be returning to the Chappaqua train station later this year, Town Administrator Penny Paderewski said this week.

“This past December the town applied and recently learned that it was awarded 10 charging stations for electric vehicles at our train station,” she said at Monday’s New Castle Town Board meeting.

The train station first introduced 20 EV spaces in 2001 as part of New York Power Authority’s Clean Commute program. Paderewski said the program was since discontinued and the chargers were removed shortly thereafter.

The new charging stations are part of a statewide initiative by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who agreed to award $4.4 million to 10 companies, municipalities and other entities to enable more than 325 new EV stations across New York.

"With New Yorkers facing higher prices at the pump, the state is stepping up to make owning an electric vehicle an affordable and convenient option," Cuomo said in a statement.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority will be working with the U.S. Department of Energy to pay for the chargers. One of the companies receiving the funding is the New York Power Authority, which will be installing Chappaqua's charging stations.

After speaking recently with Power Authority officials, Paderewski expects the chargers to be installed by the winter. The town will hold a random lottery to determine which commuters will use the spaces.

“We’ll be working on that over the course of the fall, but the intention is for them to have these installed by early winter,” Paderewski said.
