CHAPPAQUA, N.Y.With Hurricane Irene expected to hit the Florida Coast in the next 24 hours, and hurricane warnings issued for the North Carolina coast, Hurricane Irene is on the warpath towards New York. Residents in Chappaqua are preparing for the most vaunted hurricane to hit the east coast since Hurricane Gloria in 1985.
Citizens are stopping into Chappaqua Paint and Hardware in downtown Chappaqua and the A&P supermarket in Millwood in preparation for the historic hurricane.
A bunch of people have already come in, Lou Bastone said, the owner of Chappaqua Paint and Hardware.
People are stacking up on items that can be found on Weather Channels Hurricane Survival Kit , including water, non-perishable food, first-aid kit, toiletries, batteries and extra flashlights.
Weve already sold a bunch of batteries and flashlights, said Nestor Guzman who works at the hardware store. Lou will order another round of all that stuff so we dont run out.
New Castle residents can find an entire Hurricane Emergency Center area at the neighborhood A&P supermarket in Millwood.
I wasn't going to, until I went to the A&P and saw the "hurricane emergency center" which consisted of flashlights, large cans of soup, manual can openers, crackers, batteries, and such, Santelia said on Facebook. Wow, I'm starting to think I'd better stock up on canned food and have every iPad, iPod, laptop and all handheld games ready for my kids to be occupied with.
Families are also urged to prepare a family plan to keep children calm, as well as cell phones and medications in case of an emergency, such as a hurricane.
Wednesday, Hurricane Irene was upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane which forecasts a storm surge of 9 to 12 feet with winds in excess of 100 mph. A Category 3 storm could cause extensive damage to small buildings with low roofs, large trees and branches which may result in power and water outages.
