Shortly after his time began at Mercy College, Varley received an e-mail about a trip to Sirius XM from Career Services. Varley fell in love with satellite radio after hearing Howard Stern and non-top 40 music while in the car with his father.

“I was so impressed that Mercy had this kind of connection," Varley said. "I had chills being there. I met Robin Quivers from the Howard Stern Show. I told the tour guide, who I later found out ran the intern program, that is was my dream to work at SiriusXM. A few weeks later I was officially an intern working on the music stations.”

Varley switched from studying film at the School of Visual Arts to Mercy College in the fall of 2011 due to his parents' memories of the school.

“My parents both attended Mercy,” Varley said. “They loved their time here and always talked about it to me. I thought about all the wonderful memories they have of the college and so I decided it was my time to attend Mercy.”

After interning at SiriusXM two summers in a row, Varley was offered a part-time job as a sports board operator.

“Internships are a huge part of how you get into an organization – I see that now," he said. "They are invaluable. You need to know people, you need to make connections. Assistant Professor Lou Grasso really helped me along the way and guided me. He has really encouraged my personal growth and to take the opportunities presented to me at SiriusXM.”

Varley has since been promoted to comedy associate producer.

“I am helping produce and edit content Comedy Central, Jeff and Larry's Comedy Roundup, Raw Dog and Comedy Greats," Varley said. "It is amazing – I love it. And it all started with an internship.”
