The story line of "Show Me A Hero" examines the history of racial disagreements, the federally-mandated public housing dvelopment in Yonkers and how these issues had an affect on the city.

Lisa Belkin, the Dobbs Ferry resident who wrote the book, wasn't planning to take on the story until a piece appeared in The Yonkers Herald Statesman (forerunner of The Journal News) about a lottery-style method of choosing residents for the new townhouses in Yonkers.

Booker, who also experienced the racial tension during the period, grew up in New Jersey and faced the problems head on as a young mayor in Newark, according to the New York Times.

Simon and Booker both share insight into what the show is about and what message they hope to share, reported the Times.
