CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. Chappaqua's annual Sidewalk Sale will return to the downtown area July 19, and the recently created Chappaqua-Millwood Chamber of Commerce is hoping it will be the biggest one yet.
The summer sale was spearheaded in previous years by Barry Mishkin, co-owner of Family Britches, and Tara Mikolay, co-owner of Desires by Mikolay. While it still will be lead by Mishkin's Chappaqua-Millwood Business Association, Mikolay, a board member with the new chamber, said the two groups will work together to make it even more successful.
The biggest change the chamber will bring is the addition of the Taste of Chappaqua on Saturday, July 21, the sales final day. The event will feature more than 15 local restaurants and other food establishments that will provide samples of their menus.
The Sidewalk Sale is three days, but the main day is that Saturday, Mikolay said. They're doing, like, a dessert contest, and they're having a lot of the restaurants make the same dessert and the people are going to vote on it.
The sale will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily mostly along King Street and South Greeley Avenue. Visit the Chappaqua Sidewalk Sale Facebook page to find out which stores will participate and offer specials.
Along with shopping, the Sidewalk Sale will have games and entertainment, such as a bouncy castle for children and live music at the gazebo on South Greeley Avenue. The new chamber will have a table giving away balloons, car magnets and informational material.
"The cool thing is that most of the stores that are participating, along with giving great deals, they're also giving away something promotional," said Mikolay, whose store will give away water bottles with any purchase.
Mikolay said the chamber has been steadily growing since it was created nearly two months ago. She said the group now has about 90 members and hopes more businesses will join.
I think people at first were a little hesitant because there have been a few upstarts," Mikolay said, referring to previous attempts to create a chamber. "But once they saw how much work we're doing, they're like, 'We're onboard.' "
