CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. –This will be one Nemo no one will want to find.

The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm watch for Westchester County for the storm now labeled “Nemo.” The town of New Castle is expecting the worse-case scenario.

“We are taking this very seriously,” said New Castle Commissioner of Public Works Anthony Vaccaro. “I’m expecting over 12 inches and we are preparing accordingly.”

Vaccaro said his crews are currently checking their routes and pre-treating all roads with brine — liquid sodium chloride — throughout Thursday.  With fallen trees and weakened trees still left behind from Hurricane Sandy , Vaccaro said his staff was doing everything they can avoid previous damage and Nemo colliding.

“Sandy is certainly still in the back of our minds,” he said. “We are doing everything we can think of to manage the pre-damage before the snow arrives.”

Nemo will be the first big test for New Castles new CodeRED and online mapping system . Vaccaro is confident the new system will help town employees and residents communicate, when needed.

“We’ve already used it for some smaller situations and it’s been exceptional,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I’m eager to see how it handles a big storm — because hopefully it’s not a big storm — but it will preform as expected when it’s needed.”

Vacarro said that New Castle residents are no strangers to winter storms.

“I think everyone knows what to do,” he said. “Stay off the roads as much as possible and stay home if you can. And if you do find yourself on the roads, use extreme caution.”
