White Plains Hosts Medical Center Running Festival

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. ? More than 1,000 runners and walkers of all ages are expected to compete over half- and quarter-marathon distances Sunday when Westchester Medical Center hosts its Eighth Annual Running Festival.

The event draws both top-flight and recreational athletes for a 13.1-mile, 6.55-mile or Kids Run along the Bronx River Parkway course. The half-marathoners kick off the run at 8 a.m. at the White Plains Country Center.

Last year's race drew 1,200 runners, including Rye's Tyler Breckenridge, who was one of several runners decked out in green T-shirts representing the Tourette Syndrome Association of Hudson Valley.

"This is one way of raising awareness and helping other kids," Breckenridge said. "It's a great venue to run with great people of all ages and organizations."

Along with the road races, the event includes exhibits and music in the mall in front of the County Center, which is located at 198 Central Ave. in White Plains and is accessible via Metro North Railroad.

The Bronx River Parkway will be closed to automobile traffic from 7:30 a.m. to noon the day of the race.

Runners 12 and under can compete in a non-competitive Kids Fun Run starting at the County Center. Registration for the Fun Run is free and available only on race day.

The half-marathon for walkers begins at 8 a.m.; the half-marathon for runners begins at 8:30 a.m.; the quarter-marathon begins at 9 a.m., and the Kids Fun Run at 10:45 a.m. An awards presentation follows at approximately 11 a.m. All events will be held rain or shine.

The registration fee is $75 for half-marathons (14 or older) and $55 for the quarter-marathon (12 or older). Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
