Westchester's Goodell Says NFL 'Didn't Get It Right' On Rice Suspension

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Bronxville resident and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the league will implement stiffer penalties for players and employees involved in domestic violence incidents, according to ESPN.com.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted to being too lenient on Ray Rice for his suspension following a domestic incident.

The new rules come in the wake of a two-game suspension the league issued to New Rochelle native Ray Rice following an incident with his now-wife at an Atlantic City casino. Goodell's ruling in the Rice case drew severe public backlash for being too lenient.

Goodell said the league "didn't get it right" when it came to the suspension levied against Rice, ESPN.com said.

Under the new ruling, a player will be suspended for six games for a first-time offense, though the suspension can be longer if the incident involves certain circumstances like the use of a weapon or hitting a pregnant woman, ESPN.com reported.
