Westchester Varsity Basketball Teams Begin Section 1 Tournament

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Ossining High School’s girls basketball team, ranked No. 1 in a state poll in Class AA, opens the Section 1 tournament as the top seed and will play its first game on Thursday.

Albertus Magnus is the No. 1 seed in the girls Section 1 Class A Tournament, while Irvington is the No. 1 seed in Class B. In the boys Section 1 tournament, Arlington of Poughkeepsie is seeded No. 1 in Class AA. Spring Valley (Class A) and Woodlands (Class B) also earned top seeds.

Ossining (16-2) is the two-time Class AA defending champions. Senior Jalay Knowles, who has committed to the University of Hartford, leads the team with a 22.6 per game average. She is also averaging 9.9 rebounds per game. Shadeen Samuels averages 19.7 points per game for Ossining. Ossining is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class AA by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

It will face the winner of Wednesday’s outbracket game between No. 17 and No. 16 Clarkstown South. Ursuline School of New Rochelle, Our Lady of Lourdes and New Rochelle round out the top four seeds in the girls AA division.

Arlington (18-0) is ranked 18th by the New York Sportswriters. Mount Vernon (13-3) is the No. 2 seed followed by Saunders and Fox Lane. Mount Vernon is ranked No. 9 in the SportsWriters’ poll.

The Class A quarterfinals in the girls and boys brackets are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17, at home sites. The Class AA and Class B quarterfinals are scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The girls Class B semifinals are Feb. 24 at the County Center in White Plains. The girls Class A and AA semifinals are Thursday, Feb. 26 at the County Center. The girls Class C and B finals are on Saturday, Feb. 28, and the girls Class A and AA finals are on Sunday, March 1.

The County Center will also host the boys semifinals and finals. Class C and D semifinals are on Monday, Feb. 23, and the A and B semifinals are on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The AA semifinals and Class D title game are on Thursday, Feb. 26.

The Class C and B title games in the boys division will be played on Saturday, Feb. 28, and the A and AA championship games will be played on Sunday, March 1.
