Seven Ossining HS Athletes Earn Athletic Scholarships

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining Pride will be represented throughout the country at many universities next fall.

Seven Ossining athletes have committed to playing college sports, including three members of Ossining's championship girls basketball team.

Jalay Knowles is going to the University of Hartford, while Stephanie Svoboda is going to Pace University and Madison Strippoli will be suiting up for the New York Institute of Technology on Long Island.

Abigail Squirrell will be playing lacrosse at Marquette University In Milwaukee, Wis., Samantha Pearlman will be doing equestrian at New Mexico State while Sean Trenholm will be playing baseball for SUNY Binghamton. Andrew Snyder has committed to swim at Towson University in Towson, Md.

"This is the most we've ever had," athletic director and girl's basketball coach Dan Ricci said. "It shows how hard our kids have worked. This is a great accomplishment."

Ricci said his athletes are really excited and are working to get better everyday.

Squirrell said she was really excited to play lacrosse at Marquette.

"I really liked it when I visited there," Squirrell, who also plays basketball, said. "I enjoyed meeting players, coaches and teammates and I fell in love with the campus. I like that it's a new program and we're building our own legacy."

Svoboda said she is looking forward to playing close to home at Pace, especially earning a full scholarship. She said playing for Ossining prepared her for college basketball.

"We watch a lot of film and we're together all the time," Svoboda said.

Knowles said she really liked her future teammates and coaches at Hartford.

"I feel like it will be a fine transition," Knowles said. "I'm far enough to stay on campus but mom and dad are not that far away."

Knowles praised Ricci for helping her earn her scholarship.

"Having him on you will benefit you when you leave here," Knowles said. "It can get annoying, but he's only here to help. He wants to see you be a better person."

Strippoli said she was excited for the academic and athletic opportunities at NYIT.

"They take academics seriously," Strippoli said. "We have tutors and study halls. Players also get together to ensure we do the work and help out." 

Strippoli said it would be an exhilarating experience to play college basketball.
