Section 1 Division 2 Hockey Semifinals Set For Friday

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – It took longer than Pelham High School wanted, but the two-time defending Section 1 Division 2 champions persevered.

Vincent Mazzaro scored with 5:50 remaining in overtime as No. 4 Pelham defeated No. 5 Scarsdale High School, 3-2 in a Section 1 Division 2 Hockey Championship quarterfinal Wednesday.

Pelham moved on to the semis where it will face the No. 1 John Jay-Cross River team at 7 p.m., Friday, at the Brewster Ice Arena. The other semifinal has No. 2 Rye High School playing No. 3 Horace Greeley High School, at a time to be determined, Friday at the Hommocks Ice Rink in Mamaroneck.

The semi-final victors meet in the Division 2 title game 1 p.m., Sunday, at Brewster Ice Arena.

“It was an amazing game and I could not have asked for a more exciting game,” Pelham senior and captain David Morgan said. “We know John Jay is a tough team, but if we play the way we played against Scarsdale, we will be fine.”

Pelham, 12-5-2 this season, and John Jay, 19-1-1 on the year, did not meet during the regular season. The Indians are riding a six-game winning streak led by high-scoring forward Shawn Smith.

Smith has 33 goals and 10 assists and Frazier Bostwick owns 19 goals and 16 assists. Goalie Matt Lanza has a sterling 1.53 goals against average.

Rye cruised into the semis with a 9-0 victory over Hendrick Hudson High School, while Horace Greeley reached the semis for the first time in school history with a 4-2 win over Fox Lane High School behind two Owen Gatto goals and a pair of Henry Girardi assists.

Rye, 16-4-1 on the season, and Greeley, 15-3-2 this year, played to a 2-2 draw January 5.
