The fundraiser benefitted Pat Quinn, co-founder of the much-heralded "Ice Bucket Challenge" that took social media by storm and raised millions of dollars and awareness for ALS research this past summer. Quinn, who is from Yonkers, was diagnosed with ALS two years ago.
“I could never have imagined what happened last summer,” said Quinn at the event. “We were trying to create awareness and have events and raise money and all of a sudden a couple of people were dumping frozen water over their heads.”
Former Major League baseball player, manager and all-time hits leader Pete Rose and motivational speaker and former college athlete Rudy Ruettiger, whose college football career at University of Notre Dame inspired the 1993 film “Rudy,” were on hand for photos and autographs.
Peter Kelly, a member of Quinn's rugby team, White Plains Rugby Club, who helped organize the event, said donations came pouring in from across the country and people were as excited to meet “the ice bucket guy” as they were to meet Rose and Ruettiger.
“Pat's the headliner,” Kelly said. “What's amazing is when you mention the name Pat Quinn, everyone affiliates him with the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' now. There was literally a Jeopardy question about Pat. It said Pat Quinn invented this for ALS, and the answer was the 'Ice Bucket Challenge.' ”
In addition, two of the most popular radio sports programs in Westchester County, "The Clubhouse and The Scorecard" combined forces to help bring awareness to "Quinn for the Win" and the fight against ALS.
“The Scorecard” show with Chris DeAngelo broadcasted live on WFAS AM 1230 with a special addition of The Clubhouse with hosts Brian Crowell and Mark Jeffers.
