NBA's David Lee Hosts Basketball Camp In Chappaqua

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – NBA All-Star David Lee may have moved out west, but the former New York Knicks center still returned to Chappaqua this week to host his fifth annual basketball camp at Horace Greeley High School.

“There’s no reason not to come back here,” Lee said. “So far we’ve come every summer. I stay in the city and get to see old friends, so it’s a lot of fun.”

David Lee began the week-long camp five years ago with Teaches Basketball Camp when he was still with the Knicks. In the summer of 2010, the 29 year old signed a contract with his current team, the Golden State Warriors.

“He’s only missed one day in five years. It was when he signed that $80 million contract with Golden State,” said Terry Teachout, president and founder of Teaches Basketball Camp. “He doesn’t have to be here every year, but he is.”

Lee said he has been making the trip to Chappaqua from New York City every morning, where he is staying in a hotel for the duration of the camp. He said it was never a question that he would return for the camp even when he signed with a team that plays its games 3,000 miles away.

“Basketball has given me a lot of opportunities and to be able to pass that on, not only show the kids a thing or two about the different skills, but also to have them enjoy the game,” Lee said.

The five-day camp ends on Friday and is sponsored by New Castle Recreation and Parks Department. The camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15, who Lee said have no shortage of energy.

“They wear me out by the end of the day. I’m about ready to take a nap,” Lee said after Thursday’s session. “Their enthusiasm toward the game reminds me of why you play and that’s because it’s such a fun game.”
