Herodes is looking for a quality effort from his team in each game.
"This team is very raw," Herodes said. "We have a number of seniors on the team but their level of play is not indicative of senior players."
Herodes, who has coached for many years, said his team is good defensively and is hoping they can stay healthy.
"My job is to get the highest potential out of these players as quickly as possible," Herodes said. "We want to make the team a cohesive unit that is tough fr others to break down."
Greeley also has a difficult schedule, facing off against Byram Hills, Port Chester and Rye.
"We should be able to compete and that's all I ask, we compete," Herodes said.
Herodes said in a game like soccer, the final score is not always indicative of how you played.
"If you outshoot a team 20-4, but lose 2-1, that's a good result," Herodes said. "If you beat a team but are outplayed, that's a poor result."
Herodes wants his team to have fun and said when you have the ball in soccer, you're having fun. Herodes said he has had to be patient with his team, but he has enjoyed the experience.
"The kids are absolutely awesome," Herodes said. "They have been working as hard as they can. It makes it fun to be out there on the field."
Herodes said he is looking for players like sophomore Greg Ginsberg, junior Drew Goldberg and most importantly senior Zach Saltman to step up.
"He has to run the show," Herodes said of his captain. "As he goes, we go."
He called defender Jason Meshberg strong and ruthless.
"He's gong to take on the other team's top striker every single day."
The team is also composed of players with good character. When the team was announced, no one jumped up and cheered, not wanting to hurt the feelings of people not selected.
"I knew I had done a good job," Herodes said.
