CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. The Horace Greeley High School football team looks to avoid an 0-3 start to its season when it hosts John Jay Cross River at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
After a tight 26-24 loss at Brewster in the season opener, the Quakers struggled mightily in a 28-3 loss to Fox Lane on Friday. Horace Greeley now faces another uphill battle against a powerful John Jay squad.
The Quakers have lost the first two games under new head coach Tim Sullivan, who took over after longtime coach Bill Tribou retired. Tribou mentored Sullivan for many years, and the new coach said several weeks ago that he is carrying on his work.
But Greeleys defense left plenty to be desired against Fox Lane, particularly against the run. The Quakers gave up four rushing touchdowns to three rushers, including one 50-yard touchdown run. Fox Lanes Chris Manjuck rushed for 117 yards on nine carries, while Chris Johnson ran for 97 yards on 12 carries.
On Saturday, the Quakers will face another challenge in Indians Tyler Keech, one of the best quarterbacks in the section. The senior has shown on multiple occasions this season that he can make a defense suffer with both his arm and his legs.
Keech threw for 164 yards and a touchdown against Harrison on Friday and also ran for 68 yards. In the season opener against Tappan Zee, he rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.
Greeley will need to find a way to plug up the Indians rushing attack or the Quakers could be looking at an 0-3 start. Also, John Jay will be hungry for a win after a devastating 35-34 loss to Harrison in which the Indians blew a 34-7 lead in the third quarter.
