RYE, N.Y. -- Tyler Hill was not concerned about swimming a good time in his preliminary heat. Instead, Hill, swimming for Birchwood Swim Club, wanted the top seed in the final of the boy’s 12-and-under 50-yard freestyle.
Not only did Hill earn the top seed, he would go on to hold that seed and win the event, Thursday, in the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships at Playland Pool.
Along with winning the 50-free, in a time of 24.64 seconds, Hill finished with 28 points in all of his events to finish first in the boy’s 12-and-under high-point category.
Hill was not the only victor for Birchwood, which finished fifth to champion Lake Isle Country Club. Cate Sawkins won the girl’s 12-and-under freestyle with a time of 26.28 seconds. Sawkins tied for second in the girl’s 12-and-under high-point standings.
“I thought I was going to go a 25 so I was surprised when I went 24,” said Hill, 12, an eighth-grader-to-be at Robert E. Bell Middle School. “Going into the final, I got really psyched up and my sister, Kelsey, who is our coach, gave me a big hug.”
Hill said he went out fast and had the lead, only to see that he would later be in second place to Nico Ferrara of Ardsley Country Club.
“When I saw he was ahead of me I knew I had to pick it up,” Hill said. “It feels really good to win because this is my last 12-and-under 50 freestyle because I turn 13 on Aug. 11.”
