CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. Freshmen Calder Fontaine and Greg Krisberg each scored twice Sunday as the Horace Greeley varsity ice hockey team skated to an impressive 6-1 victory over Nyack/Tappan Zee at the Brewster Ice Arena.
Senior Aidan Sullivan opened the game with a goal that was set up by the quick passing by of sophomores Jake Frankel and Michael Yablon, who had two assists in the game.
The Quakers (3-1), who opened with a 2-0 lead, then scored four goals in the second period, used a solid defense and aggressive fore-checking to prevent Nyack/TZ from putting any real pressure on goalie Neil Hershman, who stopped all but one shot on goal and allowed a late goal in the third period.
Greeley's penalty kill unit saw plenty of action as the team took too many penalties, something that hurt them against John Jay in their only loss of the season. Freshmen defensive players Krisberg, Ethan Savitch and Henry Girardi continued their stellar play, as did senior Sam Spar and juniors Blake Davis and Nick Girardi.
Greeley faces a strong Hendrick Hudson team this Friday at 7:10 p.m. at Brewster Ice Arena.
Hen Hud is led by one of the best goalies in the league and we will get a chance to see how good the offensive really is, team spokesperson Bruce Yablon said. Greeley players are hoping to have a huge fan turnout in this key game.
