CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Horace Greeley High School senior guard Jackie Brett has been playing basketball since she could walk.

Her father played at the College of Charleston, so basketball has always been in her DNA.

And with all that practice, it’s no wonder she scored the 1,000th point of her stellar career for the Quakers Monday night.

The senior needed 11 points in the game against Rye and netted 20, to become just the fourth female player in school history to reach the mark.

The accomplishment added yet another item to an already impressive four-year resume.

“It was nice to get there,” Brett said. “It kind of wrapped up everything. Still, the season’s not over; but for a personal accomplishment, it kind of marked that.”

Brett was fouled on a breakaway in the second half and stepped to the line for two shots, facing the chance to score her 1,000th point at the nerve-wracking foul line.

“I’m not really a good foul shooter, so it was probably the most pressured free throws this season,” Brett said. “I hit the first, and all my friends were here and they were like, ‘Oh, you have to hit the second one!’ And it ended up going in. It was just more like relief. It was so much pressure to just finish the 11 (points).”

Brett said the feat was on her mind throughout the game, and she wanted to get it out of the way. As she played and scored, she kept counting down the number in her head.

The father of Betsy Harris, the last girl to accomplish the feat in 2004, congratulated Brett afterwards. Harris holds the school record with 1,143 points, and that’s a record Brett said she would like to break before she graduates.

But more importantly, the senior knows she has just one more chance to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs for the first time in her high school career. Brett and the Quakers have fallen in the second round in each of the past three years.

Greeley improved to 6-5 with the 51-46 win against Rye. Brett took on even more of a leadership role this year after her co-captain, senior center Lindsay Hill, tore her anterior cruciate ligament at the beginning of the season. Brett said she has tried to lead by keeping everyone together and positive through the tough times.

With only a handful of games left, the school scoring record is in reach. But Brett wants to break through that pesky playoff barrier that has blocked her throughout her high school career.

“Our goal every year is to go to the County Center,” Brett said. “So just finishing up the season strong and trying to get through sectionals is better than getting the record here.”
