CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. ? Local softball players take the New Castle recreation field at 5:30 p.m. Friday for the second annual Dusk to Dawn tournament benefiting the cancer-fighting organization Dawn's Ray of Hope.
The tournament, which will be played until approximately 8:30 a.m. Saturday, is dedicated to Dawn Re, a Chappaqua mom who died of breast cancer in February 2011. Funds will benefit the organization founded in Re's memory.
According to the organization's website, Dawns Ray of Hope was established in May 2011 by the family and friends of Dawn Re, who was involved in cancer awareness and fundraising before being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Re participated in an 111-mile bike ride in Tucson in 2001, and from 2002 to 2010 she organized a team for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys Snowball Softball Tournament in nearby Harrison.
Re also took part in the American Cancer Societys Relay for Life events in her hometown of Middlebury, Vt., and in Chappaqua, where she moved after starting her family. Through her and her familys efforts, Dawn raised tens of thousands of dollars for these charities.
