Duncalf’s outstanding senior season led to her being named the inaugural Chappaqua Daily Voice Student Athlete of the Month.

The senior, a four-year varsity swimmer and captain, led the Quakers to the 2012 Section 1 team title last month.

Duncalf and her teammates had their second consecutive undefeated league season and would win the Section 1 team title on the final event – the 400-freestyle relay.

“We went into the meet with the mindset that we wanted to swim well and make states,” Duncalf said. “When we finished 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke, we realized we scored a lot of points and then we felt we had a fantastic chance at winning.”

Duncalf said she and her teammates knew going into the final event – the 400-freestyle relay – that winning the title was within their grasp. The relay team needed a second-place finish, but Duncalf said the four swimmers were not told this.

“We didn’t want tell them because we didn’t want to stress them out,” Duncalf said.

Duncalf and her teammates celebrated the Section 1 title by taking a victory leap into the pool. It was a memory Duncalf will always treasure.

“The feeling was incredible,” said Duncalf of the title. “I don’t think I have ever experienced that feeling before and what it made it even more special was that I am a senior and one of the leaders on the team.

“We were a close team before, but this just brought us so much closer. It was a great way to top everything off.”

Duncalf qualified for the New York State Championships in the 100 backstroke and finished seventh, which satisfied her considering she was ‘very close’ to her best time.

Duncalf plans on swimming in college and has applied for early admission to Georgetown University and Boston College. Duncalf, who is taking three advanced placement classes this year, plans on majoring in pre-med/neuro biology.

Even with her busy schedule of schoolwork, high school swimming and club swimming, Duncalf has maintained a high level of excellence in the classroom. She credits her parents, friends and swimming for shaping her into who she is.
