CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- The Chappaqua Swim & Tennis Club swimming team celebrated its annual Christmas in July summer swim practice last week by helping support causes dealing with cerebral palsy.

Club swimmer Sam Mason, a 10-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, has been an inspiration to the team, according to coach Dan Levy.

"Sam's great attitude, friendly demeanor and determination are both heartwarming and inspiring," Levy said. "Sam swam in both A and B meets for us this summer and was raucously cheered on throughout his final race of the season: the 10-Under boys 50-meter freestyle."

Each summer, the swim and dive team has a Christmas in July practice with holiday music blaring, Christmas treats, swim sets based around holiday songs and candy cane-stuffed stockings for all 114 swimmers and coaches lining the fence behind the starting blocks.

"This year, to recognize Sam's efforts in the pool, we turned our Christmas in July into a 'CP for CP' event (Christmas party for cerebral palsy), with a suggested donation of $2 per swimmer/diver to go to United Cerebral Palsy," Levy reported. "Parents and swimmers were quite generous, with many giving much more than that and to this point, more than $450 has been raised,"

Chappaqua, which finished the swim season with a record of 4-1, is competing in the 89th annual Westchester County Swimming Championships from Monday through Thursday, July 28-Aug 2, at the Playland Pool in Rye. The Northern Westchester Swimming Championships Division 1 Diving Championships are on Wednesday, July 30. at Briarcliff. The NWSC All-Star Diving Meet is Thursdaym July 31, at Lewisboro. The NWSC Division 1 Swim Championships are Saturday, Aug. 2, at Yorktown.

CST's swim, dive and tennis team dinner is Saturday afternoon/evening. The season concludes with the NWSC All-Star Swim Meet at Briarcliff on Sunday, Aug. 3.
