RYE, N.Y. – Birchwood Swim Club coach Matt Hadley had a good feeling about his girls 10-and-under 200-yard medley relay team going into the event Tuesday.
“I knew we had a good group of girls so I thought we had the potential to place top eight, even top three,” Hadley said.
Kate Wohl, Ava Franks, Noelle Kaufmann and Kristin Cornish surpassed Hadley’s expectations, winning the event in a time of 2 minutes 31.24 seconds at the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming Association “Counties” Championships in the pool at Playland Amusement Park.
Hadley, who swam for Birchwood, said he thinks this is the first time Birchwood has won a relay in the county championships.
Tyler Hill also won a title, taking the boys 10-and-under 50-yard freestyle.
“The girls all swim together for the Marlins, so they are a good, cohesive group, and they have a lot of fun swimming,” Hadley said. “I told them they had to win their heat and they had to stay strong through it, because the next heat after them was a fast one, also.
“When they came in at 2:31, I thought that was going be in the top three.”
Following the final heat, Hadley said Wohl, Franks, Kaufmann and Cornish were all drying off when he turned and gave them the good news.
“They all lit up,” Hadley said. “It was a lot of fun to watch the girls celebrate.”
