The school board made the appointment at its meeting Tuesday night.
The district received 88 applications for the high school principal position. Applicants were reviewed by a principal search committee made up of three teachers and nine community members. The committee set up interviews with the applicants and gave feedback to the Pleasantville Board of Education, which made the ultimate decision.
District Clerk Irene Powers said the district would send a release announcing the board’s decision Wednesday afternoon.
Bartz, who served as principal of Pleasantville High School for two years, accepted an undisclosed resignation agreement with the school board in early June, which ended her position with the district on July 31. Hundreds of residents at the time had signed an online petition calling for a halt to the principal search and Bartz's reinstatement.
McCann’s appointment goes into effect on Aug. 12 and extends through June 30, 2014, according to a report by Patch. His resume includes serving as superintendent of the Hen Hud school district from 2006 to 2012, as well as working as an assistant superintendent for Rye City schools from 1997 to 2001.
Notably, prior to McCann’s announcement in 2012 that he planned to retire from Hen Hud schools, he and his former district were surrounded by negative publicity regarding a failed bond referendum that resulted in a debt downgrade by Moody’s, followed by an investigation into alleged marijuana sales at Hendrick Hudson High School.
At the time, a Hen Hud district spokesperson said McCann’s retirement had nothing to do with negative events and was something McCann had been considering for a while so he could spend more time with his family and have some time for himself.
