The school board adopted a resolution expressing their opposition to Betsy DeVos' nomination for U.S. Secretary of Education. The board said they disagree with DeVos' support for school vouchers and her support for for-profit charter schools.

The board sent the resolution to New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, who have said they will oppose her nomination. DeVos' nomination will be voted on by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Tuesday. Her confirmation will then be voted on by the full senate. DeVos is expected to be confirmed by the majority Republican senate.

“We need to be sure that our next leader is a true advocate for children and supports public education,” said Raymond Sanchez, superintendent of the Ossining School District.

The district says school vouchers divert taxpayer money away from public education.

“With school vouchers, taxpayers are financially supporting private and for-profit institutions, according to the Board of Education," the resolution states. "This undermines the American system of funding public education and the ability of public schools to provide a sound education for all students regardless of socioeconomic status," the resolution states.

The district expressed concern over DeVos' lack of experience in education.

“She has no degree of any kind in education, has never worked in a school or District office, has never attended a public school herself and has never sent her children to public schools,” the resolution states.
