Principal Joshua Mandel announced he is retiring at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 school year, according to a letter from Schools Superintendent Ray Sanchez.

"There is much to be said about Josh and the extraordinary work that he has accomplished over the years in Ossining," Sanchez said.

Mandel has been with Ossining since 1994 where he started as principal at Roosevelt School. He later served as principal at Brookside School and became high school principal in 1998.

"Josh has been a leader, friend, and mentor to us all," Sanchez said. "I know I personally have learned a great deal from him. Josh leads our high school with almost 1,500 students each day with a calm and pleasant demeanor. Throughout the years our students have viewed him as approachable, caring, and supportive and I know our staff can agree to the same.

Sanchez credited him with putting Ossining High School on the map. During his time as principal, Madel won the GLSEN Leadership Award, the Intel Star Innovator Award and the ESSAA Administrator of the Year Award.

This year, Ossining was named a School of Opportunity.

"It seems that not a week goes by without us sharing good news from Ossining High School," Sanchez said. "Although we will miss seeing our friend Josh on his daily rounds in the hallways of Ossining High School, we wish him all the best on this next chapter of his life. He is leaving a legacy in Ossining of true leadership and compassion for all that will be felt throughout the community for generations to come."
