The two-day conference brings together K-12 teachers from New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

It is part of the Wipro Science Education Fellowship, a five-year science teacher leadership program funded by Wipro Ltd.

The program is run by Mercy College, University of Massachusetts Boston and Montclair (N.J.) State University.

There will be an evening reception for conference participants at the Bronx Zoo. A cocktail hour will be followed by dinner and presentations by senior fellows on their leadership projects.

Projects and presenters include:

  • “Helping Students Engage in Argument Based on Evidence,” Katherine Hohman, Port Chester.
  • “Book It: Supporting the Literary Journeys of Young Scientists and Engineers with No Reservations,” Carmen King, White Plains.
  • “Science Exchange Adventures,” Mayerlin Strippoli and Abbey Gilligan, Tarrytown.
  • “Infusing STEM into the Elementary Curriculum,” Karen Lent, East Ramapo
  • “Integrating Biotechnology and Engineering into the Biology Curriculum,” Amanda Dillingham, Boston.
  • “Girls in STEM,” Alison Mahfouz, Paramus.

Amanda Gunning and Meghan Marrero of the Mercy College School of Education were awarded a $1.2 million grant to lead the New York arm of the Wipro Science Education Fellowship.

The fellowship supports three cohorts of 20 science teachers from five local, high-needs districts and focuses on leadership in science education.

The goal is to keep good teachers in the classroom where they can develop their leadership skills in the classroom rather than to putting them in administrative roles, Gunning said.

The New York districts are East Ramapo, White Plains, Tarrytown, Port Chester and New Rochelle.

Wipro is an India-based international information technology company that serves 61 other countries.

“We are thrilled to honor all the hard work these teachers have done to support science education for all learners,” Gunning said.

“The Bronx Zoo event will be a fun evening, but also a wonderful way to showcase their district work,” Marrero said, adding the zoo was chosen as a venue for the conference because it “is a wonderful local science education resource.”
