Horace Greeley Sophomores Aim to Share Their Care

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Sophomores at Horace Greeley High School are not too cool to care. Hoping to unify its class and spike school spirit, student council members invited impact speaker Andy Thibodeau to help them "share their care."

"We decided that we wanted to do something to unify the grade before we ended up getting to our senior year and wishing that we had done it earlier," said sophomore Jordan Rosenthal, who helped bring Thibodeau to the school. "We thought that bringing in a speaker to emphasize care and community would be the best way to do this."

Thibodeau, who has been speaking at schools for more than 20 years, said the biggest barrier to care is "the look." He said critical stares from fellow classmates should not discourage them from showing off their school spirit.

"The worst thing they'll say about me is 'God, they're a good a audience member. How many here can live with the rumor that you're fun?" Thibodeau said. "Don't lower your care to make negative people happy."

Thibodeau also warned the students not to fight that negativity with even more negativity. He told council members to be role models rather than push people away with sarcasm and bitterness.

"Everybody's got a story," Thibodeau said. "The last thing you want to do is send them negativity. That pushes people away."

Rosenthal said he was excited about how engaged his fellow classmates were with the presentation and hopes they will carry Thibodeau's lessons with them.

"I hope that in the next project we decide to start, we can get a little more enthusiasm going for it from us and from the rest of the class," Rosenthal said.
