“Tonight is about students getting exposed to a variety of schools through the eyes of their peers rather than with their parents,” said Class of 2014 Parent Committee Chairman Leanne Dunn.
Held in the high school’s cafeteria, more than 45 universities and colleges were represented by current freshman or sophomores, all of which were Horace Greeley graduates. Students who registered listed six schools they wanted to learn about, with each getting assigned to four of their six preferences. More than 100 juniors were in attendance.
“It’s a great chance for our kids to engage in lively and candid discussions with current college students about what college life is really like,” said Dunn, who has kids on both ends of the spectrum. Her daughter Maddy, a sophomore at Michigan, and her daughter Hannah, a Horace Greeley junior, were both in attendance.
“They can stress campus life questions over academics and their parents don’t have to know about it,” said Dunn.
Current Horace Greeley students and recent alums said they enjoyed the process of picking each other’s brains.
“It’s a useful way to know about the schools better and really get a feel for them,” said Max Smiley, a Horace Greeley junior.
For those coming to visit their former stomping grounds, the night was about giving genuine advice.
“It’s easy for us to give them relevant information because we were them not too long ago,” said Horace Greeley graduate Aemilia Phillips, now a freshman at Harvard. “The transition from Horace Greeley High School to college is a very specific transition you have to experience to understand completely.”
