CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Chappaqua Central School District officials reviewed nearly 200 applications over five months from candidates nationwide only to find that Roaring Brook Elementary School's next principal was in the school the whole time.
Assistant Principal Amy Fishkin was officially promoted to the school's top spot on Tuesday night when the Board of Education unanimously approved the recommendation from Schools Superintendent Lyn McKay.
"I'm absolutely thrilled and honored to be given this wonderful opportunity to be the next principal of Roaring Brook School," Fishkin said. "I want to thank the board, I want to thank Lyn and Eric [Byrne, former principal] and all the administrators, teachers and community members who have supported my recommendation."
Roaring Brook's search for a new leader began on Jan. 25, but after failing to find a candidate through the initial round of applications, the search was reopened in February.
"I'm thrilled as both Board President and Roaring Brook parent," said Alyson Kiesel. "Wearing both hats makes me very, very happy tonight and we're thrilled to be keeping such talent"
Fiskin will be taking over for Byrne, who was promoted to assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction before the 2011-12 school year. She will officially assume her new position on July 1.
Fishkin started as a teacher in Chappaqua 14 years ago. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and in 1998 received a master's degree in early childhood and elementary education from Bank Street College of Education.
