Barnes received a $1,000 scholarship during an awards ceremony June 4 in Cortlandt Manor.

“The business community recognizes that by supporting these scholarships for the students of today, we are strengthening our future,” Deb Milone, Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce executive director, said at the event, according to a press release.

“Maybe today I was standing next to the student who finds a cure for cancer or becomes President of the United States.”

Barnes is passionate about foreign languages, especially French. She has also been involved in theater arts since elementary school.

Barnes has been a class president at Croton-Harmon High, and also a member of the Student Faculty Congress.

She earned college credits while still a high school student from universities such as Université de Sainte-Anne and SUNY Albany.

“I’m very honored to represent Croton-on-Hudson,” Barnes said in a press release.

“It's nice to celebrate our accomplishments and to see my fellow peers also be awarded scholarships.”

Barnes plans to attend Georgetown University in the fall, where she will increase her language studies and pursue a career in international relations.

Five other students from the Hudson Valley region also received $1,000 scholarships at the awards ceremony.
