CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Incumbent Board of Education member Jeffrey Mester and newcomer Warren Messner were winners of Tuesday’s Chappaqua Central School Board election, defeating challenger Frederick Stein.

Mester received a total of 938 votes, Messner, 892, and Stein, 281, according to unofficial results announced by the district Tuesday night.

Stein was also running for the Chappaqua Library Board, which had three candidates seeking one opening. As of Tuesday night, that race was considered too close to call with 31 affidavit votes outstanding.

Joining Stein in running for the library board is Chappaqua residents Maggie Christ and Mount Kisco resident Ellen Adnopoz.

The district’s $114,828,088 budget for the 2013-2014 school year was approved by 80 percent of voters, in a vote of 997 to 247.

The budget represents a $2,625,200 or a 2.34 percent increase over the current budget. Tax rates, due to the different equalization rate used by each town, are estimated to increase by 2.25 percent for New Castle, and are estimated to increase by 2.71 percent for Mt. Pleasant.
