Chappaqua Schools To Meet With Safety Consultant

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – In light of last month’s tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the Chappaqua School District, along with just about every school district in the nation, is looking at its safety protocols.

Chappaqua Schools Superintendent Lyn McKay, left, Board of Education Vice President Alyson Kiesel and Board of Education member Jeffrey Mester, among others, will meet with a safety consultant sometime this week.

Chappaqua Schools Superintendent Lyn McKay said the district is meeting with a safety consultant this week to review its current safety plan.

“We take our safety procedures very seriously,” she said. “We have a very strong safety program already in place and are continuing to do everything we can to keep it that way.”

While some school districts may just now be reevaluating their safety procedures in light of the Sandy Hook tragedy, McKay said meeting with a safety consultant is business as usual for the Chappaqua School District.

“We are constantly meeting and listening to parents, our own administrators and health and safety officials,” she said. “It is a continuous, collaborative effort.”

McKay said the current safety plan also includes the use of “Alert Now,” a phone, email and text-message alert service that keeps everyone in the community up to date on important notifications. Anyone is allowed to sign up for it and can do so through the school district.

“Alert Now allows us to get things out in a broad manner,” she said. “It’s a good way to reach people immediately for information they need to know, whether it's school cancelations because of weather or a safety-related situation.”

The current Chappaqua School District safety plan is available online to the public on the district's website. It includes detailed explanations of the plan’s general considerations and planning guidelines, risk prevention and intervention initiatives, and response methods.
