Chappaqua Schools May Revise Twitter Policy

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Following a pilot social media program at Horace Greeley's L.I.F.E. School, the Chappaqua Central School District has revealed proposed changes to the district's policy on student/teacher Twitter usage.

Previously, students were allowed to use personal accounts to follow and interact with teachers on Twitter. If the policy is revised, students will have to register with Twitter using a district-assigned email address. Teachers and students will have to privatize their accounts and will be unable interact unless both are logged in with a CCSD.ws address.

"We want to have a policy that governs the proper use of it, the safe use of it by students, and making sure that is not abused," said Alyson Gardner-Kiesel, school board president. "It's not for kicks and giggles. It's for educational purposes."

Gardner-Kiesel and other members of the board of education encouraged students to use Twitter however they please on their own time, but when it comes to using the platform at school or interacting with school officials, it has to be monitored.

"Some teachers are using Twitter, and for them it's a great way to contact students to share information. And students respond to that usage. It seems to be a great learning tool," said board member Victoria Tipp. "They can have whatever they have privately. We can't control that and we shouldn't."

Along with several Horace Greeley High School and board of education members that are already on Twitter, the district will now be creating an official account to share information.
