Byram Hills HS In Armonk Hosts Mental Health Program

ARMONK, N.Y. – Byram Hills High School is hosting a program on Thursday, called, ‘Helping Our Children: The Role of the Family in Addressing Mental Health Needs.’

The program, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the high school, will feature expert speakers leading a discussion on mental health issues facing students.

The evening program will cap a “Day of Emotional Wellness” at the high school that will teach students about topics ranging from meditation to goal-setting to identifying signs of mental health issues. The day is sponsored by a program known as EVEN, which is a privately funded collaborative effort by the district and the University of Michigan Depression Center to address adolescent mental health issues and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

Sportscaster and former all-pro football player Ahmad Rashad will moderate the evening program. Speakers include Dr. Kate Fitzgerald and Dr. Elizabeth Koschmann from the University of Michigan Depression Center; mental health advocate, Will Heininger; Dr. Carolyn Lanfredi, Byram Hills High School psychologist; Harris R. Schwartzberg, a BHHS parent and mental health advocate; and Ginny Neuckranz, founder of Erika’s Lighthouse. Area principals, mental health professionals, child specialists, and representatives from a variety of mental health organizations have been invited to attend.

“Everyone is challenged by how to help kids who struggle with mental health issues,” said Byram Hills High School Principal Chris Borsari, noting that issues can range from mild anxiety and stress to more serious conditions such as depression. Mr. Borsari said that it was important to continue working to find the best ways of providing students with both emotional help and academic support.
