Peekskill Holiday Inn Express, New Eateries Moving Forward

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. – A Holiday Inn Express at 2 John Walsh Blvd. is one of several new businesses that are in the development pipeline in Peekskill.

The developer of the hotel, George Liaskos, applied for a building permit costing $24,000 on Sept. 19, said acting City Manager Brian Havranek. The developer told city officials earlier this year that he had changed the room configuration slightly, increasing the number of rooms from 72 to 76 to get the funding needed. Construction is expected to take around nine months.

City officials plan to enact a 3 percent hotel tax that would apply to the Holiday Inn and other city hotels, motels, and possibly bed and breakfasts if such lodging is built in the city.

"The revenue is finally coming in this year," Havranek said. "Every little bit helps, so it's good news to finally get it under way."

Peekskill Director of Planning Anthony Ruggiero said several other businesses are or may be opening in the next few months. Among them is a newly restored Firehouse Grill, which closed earlier this year and will reopen Thursday under new management.

Also in the works is a new Peekskill location for The Bayou, a popular Mount Vernon venue known for Cajun food and live music. The owners of that restaurant are considering opening a second venue at the current Peekskill Brewery location once the brewery moves to Water Street across from Homestyle Desserts.

Also being considered is Iron Vine restaurant, a tapas-style establishment in the historic district at 922 Main St., and a new Subway franchise restaurant at 9 Bank St.

The Common Council is to discuss the three potential new restaurants at an upcoming meeting.
