NORWALK, Conn. – The IMAX theater at the Maritime Aquarium is currently showing “Journey to the South Pacific,” a film that shows the people, culture and marine life of West Papua, an island province of Indonesia.

The new IMAX movie “Journey to the South Pacific” follows Jawi Mayor, a ukelele-playing 13-year-old as he and his friends discover the abundant marine life of their native West Papua, an island province of Indonesia.

The movie covers encounters with manta rays, sea turtles, whale sharks and other marine life while following 13-year-old Jawi, a West Papua native, and his classmates aboard the floating “classroom” called the Kalabia.

“Journey to the South Pacific” was directed by Greg MacGillivray, who also directed “The Living Sea,” “Dolphins” and “Everest.” Narrated by Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett, “Journey to the South Pacific” is 40 minutes long and is rated G.

The film will play at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily through Labor Day.

Area educators can preview “Journey to the South Pacific” for free in consideration of using the film for educational purposes as part of a field trip during the school year. Educator’s Guides prepared by the films’ producers are available on the Aquarium’s website. Educators must show a valid school I.D. for one free ticket.

Tickets for an IMAX movie at The Maritime Aquarium are $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for youths (13-17) and seniors (65+), and $7 for ages 3-12. Ages 2 and under are free.

To include an Aquarium visit with an IMAX movie, discounted combination tickets are $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for youths and seniors, and $17.95 for ages 3-12. Ages 2 and under are free.
