New state legislation requires better gas mileage and smog ratings for fleet vehicles in Westchester County, Astorino said in a press release.

The Board of Legislators unanimously agreed with the new state legislation, and Astorino signed the legislation into county law on Monday.

“This legislation demonstrates our commitment in Westchester County government to minimizing the environmental impact of our daily operations,” said Westchester County Legislator Catherine Parker (D-Rye) in a press release.

Parker is chairwoman of the Board of Legislators Environment and Energy Committee and a sponsor of the bill.

The new law mandates that all Westchester County fleet vehicles consume fuel at a rate of no less than 35 miles per gallon of gas.

The county owns approximately 1,500 vehicles.

“The agreement reached with the Board gives our departments the flexibility to purchase vehicles that are efficient and reliable, while striking the right balance in protecting taxpayers and the environment,” Astorino said in a press release.
