Teamsters Back Assemblyman Castelli

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. — Teamsters Joint Council 16 on Wednesday announced its support for Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli (R,C-Goldens Bridge) for re-election in the 93rd Assembly District.

Council President George Miranda said the joint council, which includes 29 local groups numbering 120,000 Teamsters from the Greater New York area, supports candidates who have proven their commitment to fighting for working families.

The policies that Castelli has helped implement working alongside Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Albany provide the tax relief and well-paying, sustainable jobs these families need, according to a statement from the Castelli campaign.

“Teamsters will be in the streets in districts across the state putting shoe leather and hard work behind these endorsements,” Miranda said.

Castelli’s campaign said the assemblyman has consistently used his vote to support the governor’s property tax cap, reduce the middle class tax rate and secure $67 million in local economic development funding.

“The hardworking men and women represented by Teamsters Joint Council 16 comprise the working families that so desperately need the tax relief and pro-growth economic policies that state government is finally delivering,” Castelli said.

Castelli also recently received endorsements from the National Federation of Independent Business and the Affiliated Police Associations of Westchester, including all Police Benevolent Associations in the 93rd Assembly District.

Castelli’s opponent, White Plains Councilman David Buchwald, was most recently endorsed by Westchester County Board of Legislators Majority Leader Peter Harckham (D-Katonah) on Oct. 17.

Castelli spokesperson Dean Travalino said Buchwald (D-White Plains), in his role as a member of the White Plains Common Council, has hiked property taxes and voted to increase the council’s expenditure budget by 54 percent in 2012.

But Buchwald painted a different picture at Wednesday’s press event, telling voters he pushed for a rezoning law for office parks that would allow for more scientific research companies to come in and bring new jobs.

As a councilman, Buchwald said, he also saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by going through the White Plains city budget line by line, and works with local chambers of commerce in Mount Kisco, Pound Ridge, White Plains and Chappaqua/Millwood.
