Following months of debate, discussion and campaigning, Scarpino has been elected to take over permanently for interim District Attorney James McCarty, who filled in for Janet DiFiore when she was appointed to the New York Court of Appeals by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

With 44 percent of district's reporting, Scarpino proclaimed his victory from White Plains with a total of 107,948 votes (70 percent) over Bendish's 47,281 votes.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s office has become a springboard for politicians looking to boost their profile. Before DiFiore was appointed to the state’s highest judicial post, her predecessor Jeanine Pirro was tasked with hosting a television show on Fox News. Other prominent Westchester County District Attorneys include Carl A. Vergari and Leonard Rubenfeld.
