Millwood Train Station Replica Still In The Works

MILLWOOD, N.Y. - A plan to re-build a replica of the Millwood Train Station along the North County Trailway is still in the works, said Town Supervisor Susan Carpenter. The old train station was demolished in May after it was deemed not salvageable.

The replica, Carpenter said, would be re-built on Westchester County property. She said the county would agree to build the station only if it is able to lease it out for commercial use.

The town worked with an architectural design program at Northern Westchester BOCES to make computerized models of the new building, which have been handed over to the county.

"At the moment we have the plans to totally re-construct the train station as it was," Carpenter said. "BOCES is willing to cut all the lumber and put it together. The county’s not going to do it if they cannot lease it for some use."

Millwood Task Force member Michael Stern said all types of commercial uses are being looked at, including an ice-pop shop, bike repairs, and soft serve ice cream.

John Picucci, owner of the Country Deli on Millwood Road, is hoping that if the building is leased out, it will not be to another food establishment.

"You need bathrooms there. That’s really a big thing. Not another food business," Piccuci said. "It’s not just my business. It’s Tazza Café, A&P ... To put another business there is really unfair."

Carpenter disagreed, saying additional businesses in the area can only serve to help bring foot traffic into the downtown area.

"You’d like to have no further economic growth in Millwood? Because any further economic development is going to hurt businesses?" Carpenter said. You can’t stop commerce.”

Piccuci said he would at least like to see bathrooms built on the property. He said trailway users often come into his store asking to use his bathrooms without buying anything. Millwood Task Force member Donald Weisstuch said the septic system in the area would make it difficult to install bathrooms.

Stern said construction on the building is "nowhere near being done" and reminded residents that it is ultimately up to the county what it wants to do with the station when it is re-built.
