“When I was a student I wanted to get involved but felt my elected officials were very unapproachable. I really wanted to change that perception once elected. I was so happy to meet with both Will and Jacob and show them what a normal day in my shoes is like,” said Ball.
“It was a great honor for me to meet these young men, they both have very bright futures ahead."
The League of Women Voters of New York State sponsored the day, which was part of a larger conference, entitled Students Inside Albany. The conference was a four-day training experience designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, enacted and changed in New York State and educate them as to how they can influence and affect this process.
William and Jacob attended several meetings with Ball and constituents from his district. They were both taken to the Senate Chamber during legislative session to take pictures on the floor and had the opportunity to sit in Ball’s chair.
“Some of the meetings I was able to attend with Senator Ball were very exhilarating,” said Bayer. “Seeing and being able to go into the Senate Chamber was very impressive. This experience has definitely made me more inclined to study politics, it is very interesting.”
“This has been very interesting experience, I didn’t think today was going to be as exciting as it was. I thought it would be very boring, but I have actually learned a lot of stuff,” said McDermott. “Senator Ball has inspired me to learn more about politics and maybe one day run for office.”
