State Police Issue Thousands Of Tickets During DWI Crackdown

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York State Police issued more than 46,000 tickets state-wide as part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign between Aug. 15 and Sept. 1, officials said.

During the crackdown the New York State Police targeted impaired and distracted driving, speeding, "move over" violations and seat belt violations. Troopers issued a total of 46,584 tickets, according to state police.

Of the tickets issued, 18,350 were for speeding, 1,937 for distracted driving, 2,667 for child restraint and seat belt violations, and 850 for "move over" violations, police said.

Troopers also conducted sobriety checkpoints during the campaign. More than 19,000 vehicles passed though with 72 of the motorists arrested on DWI charges at the checkpoints, according to authorities.

Throughout the campaign, a total of 663 drivers were charged with DWI from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1, state police said.

During the Labor Day weekend from Aug. 29 through Sept.1, the New York State Police issued more than 9,000 tickets, including 168 arrests for DWI, officials said.

Troopers also investigated 590 accidents over the holiday weekend, three of which resulted in fatalities, according to state police.
