A New Canaan resident made an emergency call to police shortly before noon on Saturday, June 16, where she “frantically stated that her dog was being violently attacked by an unknown dog” in her backyard. During the call, police said that the woman could be heard “screaming for help as she watched her dog attacked by the unknown dog.”

Officers were sent to the residence as a “priority emergency,” and upon arrival, police said the attacking dog could be seen “biting and violently shaking the victim dog’s neck.”

The officer also reported that the woman who called 911 and a neighbor were attempting to separate the two animals by spraying them with a garden hose and using a hockey stick, to no avail. Police said the dog would not stop attacking, despite their best efforts.

According to New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski - who issued a release on Friday amid alleged misinformation being spread on social media - “fearing that the attacking dog would attack the two women or the officer and that the victim dog would be killed, the first officer on scene discharged his duty weapon to stop the attack.”

The attacking dog was pronounced dead after being shot. The victim dog was transported to a local veterinarian for treatment by the homeowner who initially contacted police.

Krolikowski said that the investigation is ongoing, and no additional details will be released until it concludes. He noted that the department did not “intend to release information publicly, which could compromise the investigation; however, due to misinformation being posted on social media, we decided to release the factual summary.”
