PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A 52-year-old Peekskill woman died Monday in an early morning house fire on Diven Street in Peekskill.

The woman was found in the first-floor rear bedroom after firefighters were able to douse the flames, said Peekskill Police Lt. John White.

Peekskill and Croton-on-Hudson firefighters battled the blaze that began around 5:17 a.m., at 930 Diven St., White said.

Fire officials are on scene investigating a cause of the fire, but believe it was accidental.

Seven families have been left homeless from the blaze at the multiple-family home, said Abagail Adams, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross.

"We have a wonderful team who are caring for their needs both in finding a place to stay and with any mental health issues surrounding the fire," she said.
