Astorino was joined by  Dr. Mark Herceg, commissioner of the County Department of Health, in welcoming the patrol officers and public safety staff and thank theming for their service.

The goal of the crisis training is to give first responders the training they will need when responding to a call where emotional crisis or mental illness is a factor. This training gives them more ability to recognize these factors more quickly and the tools to de-escalate these situations.

The training is offered under the Safer Communities initiative through the collaboration of the Department of Community Mental Health, Department of Health and the Department of Public Safety.

There have been six previous sessions of the CIT course attended by about 180 first responders, mostly police. The course includes classroom instruction, role-playing and hands-on training.
