CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- New Castle Police report they issued tickets to 12 drivers they caught texting Wednesday morning.
An additional five tickets were given for cell phone usage, according to police.
"Our goal is to see texting while driving as socially unacceptable as DWI. We want to be able to report that our officers are no longer observing distracted drivers," New Castle Police Chief Charles Ferry said in a statement. "Until then NCPD's zero-tolerance enforcement will continue to ticket drivers who choose to use hand held electronic devices while driving."
The tickets come following the town's announcement of a crackdown on distracted driving , which carries a penalty including five points on an offender's license.
